ONE MONTH BEFORE SURGERY

Initial Clearance & Health Optimization

Schedule any required medical clearances (e.g., with your primary care physician or cardiologist).

If you have chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure), ensure they are well-controlled.

Smoking & Tobacco Use

Stop or drastically reduce smoking or vaping at least 4 weeks before surgery. Nicotine negatively affects blood circulation and wound healing.

Inform your surgeon if you use nicotine patches or gum; these still contain nicotine and can delay healing.

Alcohol & Substance Intake

Limit or avoid alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol can impair immune function and increase surgical risks

Weight Management

If you are considering abdominoplasty or other body contouring procedures, maintaining a stable weight leads to better, longer-lasting results.

Crash diets or rapid weight loss can compromise nutrition and wound healing.

Light to Moderate Exercise

Engage in low-impact aerobic activities (e.g., brisk walking, stationary cycling) to boost cardiovascular health.

Avoid overexertion or strenuous weight lifting that could cause injury right before surgery.

Start a Balanced Multivitamin (If Approved)

A general multivitamin (especially one containing vitamins A, C, E, and zinc) can support healing.

Confirm with your surgeon to ensure no contraindications.

THREE WEEKS BEFORE SURGERY

Complete any blood work, EKGs, or imaging studies ordered by your surgeon.

Verify payment arrangements or confirm financing coverage if applicable.

Prepare a clean, comfortable area at home with easy access to essentials (water, medications, phone).

Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the surgical center/hospital and stay with you, especially in the first 24–48 hours post-op.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE SURGERY

Blood Thinners

If you take aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel (Plavix), or novel oral anticoagulants, consult your surgeon about when/if to stop. Never stop on your own.

Herbal Supplements & High-Dose Vitamins

Discontinue supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic pills, St. John’s Wort, and others known to increase bleeding risk, unless otherwise advised by your doctor.

Hormone-Based Medications

If you’re on oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, check with your surgeon; in some surgeries (e.g., certain breast procedures), you may need specific guidance.

Absolute Smoking Cessation

Continue to avoid nicotine to ensure maximum healing potential. Even “cutting down” is not as beneficial as total cessation.

Balanced Diet

Focus on lean proteins (chicken, fish, beans), whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Proper nutrition helps with collagen formation and immune support.

Hydration

Aim for 6–8 glasses of water per day (if no fluid restriction). Proper hydration aids circulation and healing.

ONE WEEK BEFORE SURGERY

Final Check-In

Attend any preoperative appointment with your surgeon or anesthesiologist.

Bring an updated list of all medications (including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements).

Avoid Shaving

Do not shave the surgical area within 48–72 hours of surgery to reduce risk of skin irritation and infection.

If necessary, trimming with scissors or using a surgical clipper (done by clinic staff) is safer than using a razor.

Switch to a Mild Antibacterial Soap

Shower daily with a gentle antibacterial soap or as recommended by your surgeon.

This helps reduce skin bacteria and lowers infection risk.

Reduce High-Impact Workouts

Avoid intense exercise (heavy lifting, running) that may lead to muscle soreness or injury.

Stool Softeners

Consider starting an over-the-counter stool softener like docusate sodium if you’re prone to constipation or if you’ll be taking pain medications post-op.

Note: Not all surgeries require bowel prep—always clarify with your surgeon.

Load Up on Nutrient-Dense Foods

Continue a diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals (e.g., eggs, leafy greens, berries).

Stay Hydrated

Good hydration helps maintain healthy circulation, crucial for healing.

ONE DAY BEFORE SURGERY

Arrival Time

We will give you a check-in time—often 1-2 hours before the operation..

Transportation

Double-check your ride to and from the facility.

No Food or Drink

Typically, do not eat or drink after midnight unless otherwise instructed (your surgeon or anesthesiologist may allow clear fluids up to a certain time).

Important: This reduces the risk of anesthesia-related complications.

Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG)

If recommended, shower with a 4% CHG solution the evening before surgery.

Gently scrub the surgical area for 2 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Do not apply lotions, creams, or deodorant afterward unless permitted.

NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY

Lay Out Clothing & Documents

Choose loose, comfortable garments that are easy to put on and remove.

Gather your ID, insurance info, and surgical paperwork in one place.

Sleep

Aim for 7–8 hours of rest to help your body prepare.

Take Prescribed Medications

If instructed, take specific medications (e.g., blood pressure pills) with a small sip of water.

Avoid medications not approved by your surgeon (especially NSAIDs or blood thinners).

MORNING OF SURGERY

Avoid facial or body products to keep skin sterile. No makeup, lotion or fragrances.

Leave valuables at home. Use glasses instead of contacts if needed. Remove all jewelry.

Only take approved medications with a tiny sip of water.

Arrive at the specified time to allow for registration, anesthesia evaluation, and final surgical prep.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS BY SURGERY TYPE

Facial Surgeries (Facelift, Rhinoplasty, Eyelid Surgery)

No Contacts: Use eyeglasses to prevent potential corneal irritation.

Hair Coloring/Styling: Complete any salon treatments at least 1 week prior to avoid scalp irritation or infection risk.

Breast Surgeries (Augmentation, Reduction, Lift)

Sports Bra: Purchase a front-zip, supportive sports bra or surgical bra per your surgeon’s recommendation.

Hormone Medications: Some surgeons may adjust or temporarily stop certain hormone-based meds to reduce bleeding risk.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Stable Weight: Ideally maintain a consistent weight for 3–6 months pre-surgery.

Compression Garment: Ensure you have the proper binder or compression garment as recommended.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Avoid Aspirin/NSAIDs: Liposuction can have higher risk of bruising; strictly adhere to the no-NSAID rule.

Compression Garments: Acquire the correct size for post-lipo recovery.

Body Lift, Thigh Lift, or Other Extensive Body Contouring

Extended Support: You may need more home assistance for daily tasks (e.g., dressing, bathing) given multiple incision sites.

Mommy Makeover (Combination Surgeries)

Longer Recovery Planning: Combining multiple procedures (breast + abdomen) can prolong downtime; plan accordingly with childcare, meal prep, and home assistance.
